Calling 15, 17, 18 or 112: what to say and what to do
What is this for
When someone is in danger, a quick and precise call saves the emergency services time. These numbers are free, even if your phone plan has run out. This sheet explains which number to choose, what information to give and why you should not hang up too early.
Important points
- Note: Emergency calls are free and take priority. They also work with a SIM card whose plan has run out or been cancelled.
- Warning: 0 800 112 112 does not take emergency calls: it is only used to call you back. For an emergency, dial 15, 17, 18 or 112.
- Note: Are you deaf, hard of hearing or unable to speak? Use 114 (text, chat, video).
Steps to follow
Step 1: Make yourself safe first
Quickly check for danger (fire, traffic, gas). Protect yourself and others if you can do it safely. Then call.
Step 2: Choose the right number
15: Samu (ambulance), urgent health problem. 18: fire brigade, fire, accident, person in danger. 17: police or gendarmerie, crime or assault. 112: European emergency number, it directs you to the right service. If unsure, dial 112.
Step 3: Give the minimum information
Say the phone number you are calling from, what is happening (illness, accident, fire…) and the most precise location possible: town, street, number, floor, door code, visible landmark.
Step 4: Answer the questions and follow instructions
The operator may ask other questions (number of victims, the person's condition). They can guide you to give first aid while waiting for help. Speak calmly, in short sentences.
Step 5: Only hang up when told to
Hang up only when the operator tells you to. If possible, send someone to meet the emergency services in the street and show them the way.
Step 6: Answer if 0 800 112 112 calls you back
Emergency services may call you back from 0 800 112 112. This call is free and it is not a scam. You can save this number as "Emergency services".
