Seeing a psychologist with reimbursement through Mon soutien psy

What is this for

Have you felt anxious, sad or exhausted for a while? The Mon soutien psy scheme from the national health insurance (Assurance Maladie) reimburses up to 12 sessions a year with a partner psychologist, from age 3. You can book directly, without seeing a doctor first. It is meant for mild to moderate distress, not for emergencies.

Important points

  • Warning: Mon soutien psy is not suitable if there is a suicide risk, severe disorders, or if you are already under psychiatric care. In these cases, talk to a doctor, or call 3114 or 15.
  • Note: Student? Health insurance says the Santé psy étudiant scheme also lets you see a psychologist without paying upfront.
  • Note: The psychologist must charge the €50 rate. Extra fees mean the reimbursement will be refused.

Steps to follow

  1. Step 1: If you are thinking about suicide, call now

Mon soutien psy is not suitable for suicidal thoughts. Call 3114 (free, 24/7) or 15. In immediate danger, call 15 or 112.

  2. Step 2: Find a partner psychologist

Search the official directory on monsoutienpsy.ameli.fr. For a child or teenager, tick the "For children" filter.

  3. Step 3: Book an appointment, with or without a doctor

You can call the psychologist directly. You can also first see your doctor or midwife, who gives you a letter. For a minor, the parents must give their consent.

  4. Step 4: Have the assessment session, then follow-up

The first session is an assessment interview. After that, you can have up to 11 follow-up sessions, so 12 sessions per calendar year in total.

  5. Step 5: Pay and get reimbursed

A session costs €50. Health insurance reimburses 60%. Your top-up insurance may pay the rest. With the Complémentaire santé solidaire (C2S, free top-up cover) or State Medical Aid (AME), you pay nothing upfront.

Documents to prepare

  • Carte Vitale or proof of entitlement (health insurance, C2S or AME)
  • Letter from your doctor or midwife, only if you go through them
