Aide juridique gratuite et aide juridictionnelle

What is this for

En France, toute personne, quelle que soit sa nationalité, peut accéder à des conseils juridiques gratuits et, sous conditions de ressources, à une aide pour financer ses frais de justice (aide juridictionnelle). Vous n'avez pas à être seul face à un problème juridique.

Steps to follow

  1. Step 1: Point-justice: free legal information

Point-justice offices (formerly called Points d'accès au droit and Maisons de justice et du droit) offer free legal information and consultations in town halls, courts, social services offices or France services centres. Lawyers, notaries and legal advisers inform and guide you. Call 3039 (free) to find the nearest one.

  2. Step 2: Mediation and conciliation

Some point-justice offices also offer mediation or conciliation to settle a dispute without going to court (neighbours, consumer issues, family). Ask on 3039 or at the judicial court in your département.

  3. Step 3: Legal aid (aide juridictionnelle)

If your income is low, the State pays all or part of your lawyer's and court fees. For a single person in 2026, legal aid is full if your reference taxable income (revenu fiscal de référence) is no more than €12,957 a year (about €1,080 a month), and partial up to €19,433. Your assets also count. If you are a foreign national, you must normally live in France on a regular basis, even if your residence permit has expired. You apply online or at the legal aid office of the judicial court.

  4. Step 4: Associations helping foreign nationals with their rights

La Cimade, GISTI and other associations give specialised legal advice to foreign nationals, often free or at very low cost.
